State your provocation.

A provocation is a bold, overdrawn claim about a phenomenon existing theory fails to explain. State it at maximum force — the sparring partner will push back. Don't soften it yet. The challenge is the method.

Your research is private

Extrafemi Labs never sees your research. This tool is a static HTML file that runs entirely in your browser. There is no Extrafemi Labs server, no database, and no logging. Your conversations never touch any infrastructure we control.

Anthropic and OpenRouter process your API requests — this is unavoidable given how the tool works. Neither provider uses API-tier data to train models by default. See their policies: Anthropic Privacy Policy ↗ · OpenRouter Privacy Policy ↗

Demography
"Development destroys its own conditions for demographic continuation — the very prosperity that makes policy possible simultaneously makes policy insufficient."
Challenges: second demographic transition, Lesthaeghe (1986), aspiration vs. preference
Economics
"Microfinance does not fail because borrowers lack discipline — it fails because it is a savings product sold as a credit product to people who need insurance."
Challenges: Banerjee & Duflo (2011), Karlan & Zinman, MFI model design
Sociology
"Social capital does not explain community resilience — it explains community stagnation. The networks that survive crisis are the networks that prevent reform."
Challenges: Putnam (2000), Bourdieu (1986), bonding vs. bridging capital
Public Policy
"Conditional cash transfers succeed not because they change behaviour but because they reveal that the behaviour was already there — constrained, not absent."
Challenges: Bolsa Família evidence, Fiszbein & Schady (2009), behavioural theory
Management & Strategy
"Disruptive innovation is not a theory of market entry — it is a theory of incumbent psychology. The disruption is in the boardroom, not the product."
Challenges: Christensen (1997), Henderson & Clark (1990), resource dependence theory
Public Health
"Health systems in LMICs are not underfunded — they are incorrectly funded. The problem is allocation architecture, not resource volume."
Challenges: WHO financing models, Marmot (2005), Alma-Ata primary care framework
Political Science
"Democratic backsliding is not caused by institutional weakness — it is caused by institutional success. The procedures that make democracy stable are the procedures that make autocratic capture possible."
Challenges: Levitsky & Ziblatt (2018), Dahl (1971), competitive authoritarianism literature
AI & Society
"AI does not threaten knowledge production — it threatens knowledge legitimation. The crisis is not epistemic but sociological: whose work counts, and who decides."

③ Connect your API key
How do I get a free OpenRouter key?
  1. Sign up at openrouter.ai with Google, GitHub, or email — no card required.
  2. Go to the Keys page: profile icon (top right) → Keys, or open openrouter.ai/settings/keys directly.
  3. Click Create Key and give it a name (e.g. "whetstone").
  4. Set the credit limit to $0, or leave it low. This caps what the key could ever spend — it doesn't restrict which models you can call. Free models (tagged :free) are capped by daily requests, not by spend, so this keeps you at zero cost with no card on file.
  5. Create the key and copy it immediately — OpenRouter won't show it again. It starts with sk-or-v1-.
  6. Paste it into the key field below, then pick a :free-tagged model — a non-free model will still try to bill the key.

Iterative Adversarial
Inquiry

A framework for generating original theoretical contributions through structured adversarial debate. The sparring partner does not protect your ideas from challenge — it sharpens them against challenge. What survives is stronger. What doesn't had to go.

→Abstract

What Whetstone is

Whetstone implements the Iterative Adversarial Inquiry (IAI) method — a research framework for generating theoretically rigorous contributions through structured adversarial debate. It is not a writing assistant. It is a sparring partner whose job is to find the failure points in your framework before you publish it.

The name comes from the whetstone — a sharpening stone. What the stone does to a blade, the method does to an idea. The contact is the point.

Obasa & Obasa (2026) — Iterative Adversarial Inquiry: The Whetstone Method · SSRN ↗
→Why it exists

The practices were never equally available.

High-quality research has never required access to information. The internet solved that years ago. What it has always required — and what has never been equally available — is access to the intellectual practices that turn information into a defensible contribution: adversarial debate, red teaming, steel-manning.

Those practices have historically lived within elite institutions. Seminar cultures. Senior colleagues willing to push hard. The informal intellectual life of well-resourced departments. If you were not in proximity to that environment, you were working without the sharpest available tools, regardless of how good your ideas were.

AI changes this — not because it is a genius, but because it can be configured to behave the way a rigorous intellectual environment behaves, and because a generation of academic publishing has been fed to it. It has breadth. Whetstone is that configuration.

How IAI works

Track 1 — Theoretical development (Stages 0–4). You begin with a provocation — a bold, overdrawn claim about a phenomenon existing theory fails to explain. The sparring partner challenges its logical coherence (Stage 1), then tests it against the literature (Stage 2), then stress-tests it against failure scenarios (Stage 3), then requires you to justify why a new framework is necessary at all (Stage 4). What survives is your confirmed position.

Track 2 — Paper production (Stages 5–8). From the confirmed position: implication pursuit (where does the framework lead, uncomfortably?), draft, three-reviewer peer review, and revision. The paper that emerges has been tested before it was written.

The sycophancy caveat. The greatest risk in AI-assisted research is an AI that begins with a genuine challenge and progressively accommodates your pushback, producing the appearance of adversarial debate while functionally validating your prior position. IAI addresses this through documentation (the transcript shows AI position drift), change-detection (the framework must visibly change in response to challenge), and literature verification in Stage 2b (a sycophantic objection that evaporates on contact with the literature was never grounded).

Adversarial sparring
The sparring partner's job is to break your idea, not support it. Every stage challenges before it accepts. Sycophancy is the enemy of the method.
Literature breadth
Academic publishing has been fed to AI. It knows the literature. It will tell you where your framing is twenty years behind the field.
Citation enforcement
Every factual claim carries a tier-graded citation — Confident, Approx, or Logical — rendered visibly in chat so you know exactly what is sourced.

Why Whetstone exists

The tools were never
equally available.

Now, that problem is gone. Not because AI is a genius. Because AI can be configured to behave the way a rigorous intellectual environment behaves — and because a generation of academic publishing has been fed to it. It has breadth. It knows the literature.

Whetstone is that configuration.

Obasa et al. (2026) — AI, Knowledge Accessibility & Democratisation of Research ↗
From a real session — Stage 2 · Literature debate
Development destroys its own conditions for demographic continuation — the very prosperity that makes policy possible simultaneously makes policy insufficient.
Researcher's provocation. Stated before any AI engagement at Stage 0. This is the founding intellectual act — 100% the researcher's.
Sparring partner's challenge
That framing is not novel. Lesthaeghe and van de Kaa named it in 1986 — the second demographic transition. The literature has been testing this for forty years. What does your framework add that SDT does not already account for?
The idea survived. The framing was sharpened. The Aspiration Horizon is the result. Lesthaeghe & van de Kaa, 1986
What Whetstone is not
AI did not write the provocation. AI did not hold the position under challenge. AI did not decide which implications to follow. Whetstone is a sharpening tool. The idea that goes in is yours. The idea that comes out has been tested against the strongest available version of the opposing case.

at a glance

The intellectual practices research has always required — priced, for the first time, at what they actually cost to run.

The old path
Elite institution + research access
What proximity to seminar culture, rigorous peers, and institutional databases has historically cost. Available to few.

The breadth argument

AI has read the literature. All of it.

This is not a metaphor. Academic publishing houses licensed their peer-reviewed content — previously justified as requiring paywall protection — to train AI systems. That research is now inside the model. Whetstone deploys that breadth as an adversarial instrument calibrated to your domain and literature base.

"Publishers justified paywall restrictions on process legitimacy grounds, then licensed that same research to train AI — without researcher consent, without compensation, and without applying the same process requirements to that decision."
Informa/Taylor & Francis: $75M projected AI licensing revenue for 2024 (incl. $10M Microsoft deal) · Springer Nature: $23M (Google) · Wiley: $23M · Elsevier trained Scopus AI on its full copyrighted corpus from 2013 · Total documented: $121M+ in a single year — from the same research previously behind the paywall. Sources: Battersby (2024); Will Scott (2025); Inside Higher Ed (2024).

Domain coverage
Economics, sociology, psychology, public policy, public health, political science, management, anthropology, education — and any domain you specify. Whetstone loads field-specific literature and challenges for each.
Literature depth
Arrow, Bourdieu, Ostrom, Acemoglu, Kahneman, Porter, Lesthaeghe, Merton — the canonical texts are known and cited with source links. Stage 2 tests your positioning against them directly.
What it cannot do
It cannot substitute for your local knowledge, your fieldwork, or your post-experiential bias. AI has breadth. You have depth. The provocation — the founding claim — is always yours. That is the method.

Where Whetstone sits

vs. other frameworks

Most tools that involve AI and research treat AI as an author, an assistant, or a teacher. Whetstone is none of these. The critical distinction is when in the research process challenge is applied — and who the AI is in relation to the researcher.

Framework AI role Pre-formation challenge Citation enforcement Contribution record Paper production
Whetstone — IAI v3.0 Adversarial sparring partner ✓ Stages 1–4 ✓ 3-tier enforced ✓ Full session record ✓ Track 2, Stages 5–8
Hypothetico-deductive method None ✗ Post-formation only ✗ ✗ Standard peer review
Socratic method tools (Kialo, etc.) None or minimal Partial — user-driven ✗ ✗ ✗
Standard peer review None ✗ Post-formation only Varies by journal ✗ ✓ Publication standard
AI writing assistants (ChatGPT, etc.) Author / co-author ✗ ✗ ✗ Draft generation only

The critical difference: in hypothetico-deductive research and standard peer review, challenge is post-formation — the thesis is formed before it is tested. IAI applies challenge pre-formation, at the point where it is most generative: the researcher can reconceive rather than merely revise.
